How Does Virtual School Work?
The Lee Virtual School (LVS) has elementary, full time and part time options.  Although all are administered the same and focus on students independently achieving their fullest potential, the operation of elementary, full and part time are different.  LVS Elementary is a full time only, K-5 learning option that utilizes indirect instruction and a combination of book based and on-line resources.  LVS full time 6-12 is completely online and, like elementary, is the student’s school of enrollment.  Full time students do not attend a brick and mortar school at all.  Students typically work at home, under the supervision of a learning coach.  A learning coach is an adult (usually a parent) that is responsible for making sure that the student stays on pace and in regular contact with teachers.  At the elementary level, this learning coach is the actual facilitator of learning.  That is, the learning coach is responsible for preparing each day's learning activities, and providing most of the face to face instruction for the student.  As students progress through grade levels, they become more independent and require less instructional assistance.  By the time students are in grade 6, they work in an autonomous, direct instruction online environment.  They receive all instruction from their teacher and online courseware.  Aside from some novels for Language Arts/English courses and AP Course materials, curriculum for grades 6-10 is entirely online.  It is accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days/week, 365 days per year.  This creates universal access in which an independent learning will thrive and achieve at a rate that is difficult to do in a traditional classroom setting. Is Attendance taken? What if a student completes work over the weekend/holiday?

Yes.  Lee Virtual School follows the same calendar as all School District of Lee County schools.  Students are expected to attend daily and maintain pace with passing grades.  Grades K-12 students enrolled in the full-time program are required to submit their attendance everyday, Monday - Friday.

From a parent: “I understand students need to 'report' by signing in every school day?”
This is correct.  Lee Virtual School is a full time school just like any other public school in our district or the state.  We follow the same requirements for compulsory attendance as set forth by district policy and state law.  In order to do this virtually, we have a system by which students log in, (and possibly out) to comply with attendance documentation.  However, just as a student can attend his/her first period class and not participate or submit any work and then not be successful in a brick and mortar course, the same is true for virtual classes.  Attendance in virtual school is composed both of logging in, as well as submitting the prerequisite amount of work for each course to remain on/ahead of pace.  We follow all state reporting requirements including uploading absensces to state agencies such as DHSMV.

From a parent "What if my son/daugther plays a travel sport and gets all of his/her work done for the week?" Students in Lee Virtual School may "attend" on non traditional days.  Our curriculum is available for students to work 365/days year, 24 hours/day.  Our teachers are available from 8am-8pm on every calendar school day.

How often would my child have to report to a physical location?

“...how often would my child have to report to a physical location?”  All students have to attend a few face to face events every semester.  We do no provide transportation so it is the responsibility of the parent/guardian to make sure students attend these events promptly.
These events include: New student/parent orientation, first day of of each semester, all district/state mandated testing, and class meetings.  In addition, in the unlikely event that a student would fall behind or repeatedly demonstrate low performance in a subject or multiple subjects, the student may be required to do some or all classwork each day with assistance from teachers at the school office. The short answer to this question is  approximately 8-10 times/school year, depending on the grade level.  Mandatory dates are published well in advance on our school calendar which can be found at http://lvip.leeschools.net.  HOWEVER, dates do change based on circumstances so we suggest all students and parents check the school calendar DAILY.

IS THERE A FACE-TO-FACE REQUIREMENT? WHAT SORT OF ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED?
LVS offers a true distance learning experience that does not require seat time in a traditional classroom.
However, we are proud to offer face to face contact with teachers as an option for students. Students are
encouraged to meet with teachers as needed individually or in groups to receive additional instruction.
Periodically, standardized testing and academic interventions require students to attend face-to-face
activities. Teachers may exercise the option of having students take face-to-face proctored assignments and
exams to ensure fidelity. Students are expected to actively participate in all courses on a weekly basis in order
to maintain educational integrity. Students are considered truant if there is no participation in the online
courses for more than one week without prior approval and will be reported as truant to the proper
authorities. Students consistently behind in one or more courses may be required to attend LVS daily until
they demonstrate consistent work.

HOW DO I KNOW IF ONLINE LEARNING IS RIGHT FOR ME?
A successful online learner is a motivated self-starter and is committed to the success of his or her education.
While LVS offers world-class educational opportunities, there is a high degree of accountability placed upon
the student. That can only be achieved by putting forth much effort. Like anything, the more effort you put
into your education, the greater the benefit. Before you decide whether our college-prep courses and high
school diploma programs are right for you, we suggest that you speak with our school counselor.

IS LVS LESS CHALLENGING THAN OTHER TRADITIONAL ACCREDITED HIGH SCHOOLS?
No. As an accredited school, LVS offers a flexible alternative for students. It is not an easier option than
traditional accredited high schools. All courses are written at or above grade level and require an average of
one to two hours of focused study on a daily basis to complete one course within the traditional semester
time frame. Our courses engage students in real-life projects, requiring the use of critical thinking, problemsolving
skills, and the ability to apply the knowledge they have acquired. Lee Virtual is NOT a credit recovery
program. Return to Top

What is virtual school?
By definition, virtual education is teaching and learning in which students and teachers are separated by space and/or time.  In its purest form, teachers and students have no physical contact during the instruction process.  Historically, virtual education took the form of “distance learning,” or “correspondence classes.”  With the advent of computers, the internet, smart phones, tablets, etc., virtual education has become the fastest growing form of education in North America.
